File size and quality
At equal visual quality, HEIC needs about 50–60% of the bytes of a good JPG — a 3 MB JPG becomes a 1.5–2 MB HEIC. HEIC also supports 10-bit color versus JPG's 8-bit, which preserves smooth sky and skin gradients with less banding. If both formats were universally supported, HEIC would win outright; the contest is really about compatibility.
